The STAR process® technology by ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG (formerly ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH) is used for the production of propylene and butylenes by dehydro-genation of propane (PDH) and butanes (BDH), respectively. Especially propylene shows continuous growth of approximately 4.5% per year mainly driven by the demand for polypropyl-ene (PP). This results in approximately 5 million tonnes per year required propylene capacity additions worldwide, out of which approx. 1-2 million tonnes per year will be covered by new PDH plants.
In 2006 Uhde was awarded a lump sum turn-key contract for the realisation of a PDH/PP com-plex with a capacity of 350,000 tonnes per year of propylene and PP production by Egyptian Propylene and Polypropylene Company. The plant, which uses the STAR process® with oxyde-hydrogenation technology, has been started-up in 2010. This is the first propane dehydrogena-tion plant in the world applying the innovative principle of oxydehydrogenation.
Since then, three other clients have awarded ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions with contracts for plants with even larger capacities of up to 545,000 tonnes per year, resulting today in a total licensed capacity of 1.8 million tonnes per year for STAR process® technology.
The presentation will highlight recent technological developments and lessons learnt from the operation of the EPPC plant.
